The outside of the filter is a metal can with a sealing gasket that allows it to fit securely against the mating surface of the engine. The can’s base plate holds the gasket and is pierced just inside the gasket with holes around the rim.
A central hole is threaded for mating the engine block with the oil filter assembly. The filter material, most often made of synthetic fibre, is inside the can. The oil pump of the engine transfers the oil directly to the tank, where it reaches the surface of the base plate from the holes.
