India continues to reel under poverty and illiteracy, people living in remote areas don’t even an access to basic health facilities which is the major cause of their sufferance and high mortality rate in villages. If facts are to be considered, then whopping 60% of total rural population are living below the poverty limit i.e. they cannot afford good medical facilities even if their village is equipped with it. Considering the scenario, government and NGOs connect with each other to provide them with proper health facilities and for this there are agency running MMU (Mobile Medical Unit).
Let’s discover some more facts about MMU:
• Facility provided- In olden times, Mobile Medical Units were a makeshift camps organized in rural areas at any specific place that is accessible to people. It used to be equipped with a doctor, nurse and a helper or a compounder who were trained with basic health related issues. With better transport and mobilization facility, these MMUs turned into MMV i.e. Mobile Medical Vans that made mobility easier and also less time consuming. There are many NGOs with CSR projects that work for healthcare facilities.
• Creating awareness- As we already discussed that mobility became easier with medical vans, NGOs not only starting working on cure but also on prevention of disease. These mobile vans undertake a parallel task of educating people about basic health issues and their causes. They educate people about the importance of hygiene and how they must take care of themselves in order to avoid body ailments. Agency running MMU undertake regular health checkup camps and vaccination programs to reduce the cases of life threatening diseases. They also tell people about the ways in which they can keep themselves fit and health like yoga.
• Advance technology- With every passing year, mobile medical vans have also become modern and well equipped with latest technological facilities. Unlike olden time when a person had to go to the hospitals to undertake facilities like X-ray facility, operation unit, pathology, incubators , etc. now he/she can enjoy these facilities at their villages through these medical vans.
Hence, apart from above mentioned benefits there are various facilities that these medical vans provide to under privileged people and help in making their lives better. NGOs with CSR projects also contribute much to health and hygiene facilities for the people who are not financially capable to undertake treatment in hospitals.
